After the fire at Apollo Masters

Vinyl Alliance gives the all-clear

The bottleneck in lacquer discs will not affect LP production in the long term, the organisation believes.

"Alternatives are already available that will help bridge the shortage," says Vinyl Alliance President Günter Loibl. This could also be an opportunity to turn to new technologies. He is, however, not saying this completely altruistically, as Loibl is the head of Rebeat, the company that developed such a new technology with "HD Vinyl". In this technology, cutting gravers and lacquer foil are replaced by laser engraving. Another alternative to lacquer foil is the well-known "Direct-to-Metal Mastering" (DMM). Further, according to the Vinyl Alliance, some start-ups were planning to produce lacquer discs. At present, only MDC in Japan makes them – and has rationed supplies in order to be able to supply as many pressing plants as possible with the limited resources.
