"80.2 percent of revenues from music sales in Germany are now generated digitally," writes the German record companies' industry association. The biggest part of this is accounted for by audio streaming (73 percent of total industry revenue), while downloads hardly play a role at all with a 2.4 percent share of revenue. Compared to the first half of 2021, streaming increased by a good 9 percent, but vinyl records achieved the greatest growth with a good 12 percent. This stands in contrast with a 6.5 percent decline in CD sales.
Almost one in three euros generated by the industry from physical sales now comes from vinyl records: they now contribute 6.2 percent of the total revenue, while the CD only comes in at 12.8 percent. Overall, the music industry in Germany is pleased to report a 5.5 percent increase in sales compared to the same period last year.
