Two new Models: 10 and 12 Inch

Velodyne Introduces new "Impact X" Subwoofers

Velodyne Acoustics launches the new subwoofer series Impact X, which includes a ten-inch and a twelve-inch model with newly developed high excursion drivers and powerful MOSFET Class D power amplifiers.

The new Impact X line consists of two devices: the ten-inch Impact X 10 subwoofer, with housing dimensions of just 32 x 36 x 40 centimeters – making it also fit into smaller spaces –, while the Impact X 12, with its twelve-inch driver, is said to also be suitable for large rooms. In both models, the drivers fire forward and are supported by a downward-firing, optimized bass reflex port.

Velodyne Acoustics' new Impact X models use a driver that has been designed completely new. The two-inch voice coil made of four layers of high-purity copper is driven by a powerful ferrite double magnet – for maximum efficiency –, which together with the flexible surround made of nitrile rubber is said to allow travel of up to 25 (10-inch model) or 28 (12-inch model) millimeters. The stable basket, together with the centering made of a cotton-polyester composite material, is supposed to ensure maximum precision. The lightweight yet stiff paper cone is furthermore said to allow accurate transient reproduction with minimal partial vibrations.

The Impact X subwoofers are controlled by powerful high-resolution DSPs from renowned manufacturer Analog Devices. The Class D power amplifiers use four 180-volt MOSFET transistors with a current delivery capability of 34 amperes, and the efficient switching power supply was also designed around two 17-ampere / 650-volt MOSFET transistors. According to Velodyne, the ten-inch model delivers 250 watts of continuous and 500 watts of impulse power while the 12-inch subwoofer delivers 300 and 600 watts, respectively.

In addition to the usual parameters for volume, crossover frequency and phase, the Impact X series offers four sound presets for different uses: "Flat" provides the most low bass, while "Movie" is designed for maximum output for movies and "Rock / Pop" has a frequency response optimized for these music genres. The "Night Mode" limits the bass reproduction. The currently selected preset is shown in the front display of the Impact X subwoofers. In addition to switching sound modes, the included remote control also allows convenient adjustment of crossover frequency, volume and phase from the listening position. In addition, the display of the Impact X subs can also be dimmed remotely.

The new Velodyne subwoofers are made of extra-thick MDF material, while the elastomer isolation feet are said to provide efficient decoupling from the floor. RCA inputs for left and right channels allow the connection to source players, and additional subwoofers can be connected via matching output jacks. Cable clamps also make it possible to integrate the subwoofers into systems where the source does not have a suitable RCA output.

The Impact X subwoofers from Velodyne Acoustics are available immediately* from authorized retailers. The MSRP including taxes is said to be around 800 euros for the Impact X 10 inch* and around 900 euros for the Impact X 12 inch*.
