For this top model, every detail is said to have been perfected to achieve the goal of absolutely authentic and audiophile sound. For the first time in the company's history, a pair of headphones thus carries the number 5000, which only superior high-end products such as the NS-5000 speakers receive.
By carrying "orthodynamic" drivers, a special form of planar magnetostatic drivers, it continues the long tradition of this technology known from the HP-1. For the new YH-5000SE, Yamaha has redesigned this specially developed driver with a thin-layer diaphragm, paying significant attention to weight reduction; the "voice coils" are etched directly onto the membranes now, and Yamaha specifies the frequency range at 70 kilohertz.
The 320 gram lightweight over-ear headphones encloses the ears comfortably. Thanks to their open design, a very good air circulation as well as long-term high wearing comfort are said to be ensured. A 3.5 mm cable with a 3-pin plug is included for connection, and a balanced 4.4 mm cable with a five-pin plug (Pentaconn) and a 6.3 mm adapter are included for corresponding headphone amplifiers. Future owners can also choose from two included ear pads: a sheepskin version and one made of Ultrasuede® microfiber fabric.
Yamaha's new flagship headphones YH-5000SE are expected to be available in early 2023* and will be priced at around €5,500*.
