MK2: new versions of the DALI Opticon Series

Six improved versions of the DALI Opticon series of loudspeakers will be launched under the name "Opticon MK2" in the next few weeks.

The completely overhauled series consists of the standmount speakers Opticon 1 and 2 MK2, the floorstanding speakers Opticon 6 and 8 MK2, the on-wall speaker Opticon LCR MK2 and the center speaker Opticon Vokal MK2. The most striking innovation of this group of six is their comprehensively revised design. They are available in three finishes: satin white, satin black and tobacco oak. The speakers now also feature matte surfaces throughout – including the new front panels of all tweeters, which are made of matte black die-cast aluminum.

Some technical changes were also made: the woofers and mid-bass drivers still are wood-fiber cones, shimmering red, typical for DALI. These are, however, special modified versions of the cones from the high-end Epicon series, which have been dyed a bit darker to match the Opticon MK2 look.

The developers have also revised the rear-facing bass reflex ports of the standmount and floorstanding models: these now have "dual flare" reflex tubes, which are shaped both outwardly and inwardly as funnels and should thus reduce flow noise to an absolute minimum. In the Opticon VOKAL MK2, designed for near-wall placement, the reflex slots continue to be front-facing, while the particularly flat Opticon LCR MK2 features reflex ports developed specifically for DALI on-wall loudspeakers that exit directly towards the wall.

While a comparatively large fabric dome tweeter was already responsible for reproducing the high-frequency range in the previous Opticon series, all Opticon MK2 models feature an even larger 29 millimeter tweeter, which was developed on the basis of the dome used in the active Callisto C series.

The larger membrane of the tweeter is said to not only result in lower distortion and higher capacity, but also harmonize even better with all midrange and mid-bass drivers in the Opticon MK2 models, thanks to the lower cutoff frequency of 2 kHz. Except for the two standmount speakers Opticon 1 and 2 MK2, the new series also continues to use DALI's hybrid tweeter unit with an additional ribbon for the highest frequencies.

Prices (for Germany; MSRP; per unit):

  • Opticon 1 MK2: €399
  • Opticon 2 MK2: €549
  • Opticon 6 MK2: €949
  • Opticon 8 MK2: €1,499
  • Opticon LCR MK2: €749
  • Opticon Vokal MK2: €599
